Threshold cryptography for CBDCs on the XRPL · Trinity College Dublin

Role

Research Intern at the ADAPT Centre, Trinity College Dublin — supervised by Dr. Hitesh Tewari.

Focus

Applying threshold cryptography to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) — distributing key material and decryption authority across multiple parties so that no single holder can unilaterally decrypt, while an authorised quorum can.

What I worked on

  • Threshold encryption for CBDC transactions — secret-sharing of keys so trust is split across parties rather than concentrated.
  • Integrating the scheme with the XRPL so issuance and settlement stay verifiable on-chain.
  • Weighing the trade-offs between privacy, auditability, and performance in a central-bank setting.

Stack

Threshold / secret-sharing cryptographic primitives, the XRP Ledger (XRPL), and supporting tooling.
