I don't know why we read going down. To me it would make more sense if we read up. Reading down feels like arriving at an ending. Reading up feels like climbing.
The experiment is simple: start at the bottom, travel upward, and see whether the prose lands differently. Most of the time it does. You feel the lift of a sentence instead of the weight of one.
There is nothing profound about this. It is mostly a typographic joke. But little formal choices are how books begin to have a personality, and a personality is how a book begins to matter.
So: start at the bottom. Keep going. The ceiling is where the last idea lives.
